When someone quotes you "$900 for a dental implant," there is a good chance they are quoting one of three components you will end up paying for. This is not usually dishonesty. It is an industry convention that happens to be extremely confusing for patients comparing prices across countries.
The three parts
What people call "an implant" is an assembly:
- The implant post (fixture). The titanium screw placed into the jawbone. This is the part that osseointegrates, and it is the part most often quoted alone.
- The abutment. The connector that screws into the post and protrudes through the gum. The crown attaches to this. Abutments can be stock or custom-milled, and custom costs more.
- The crown. The visible tooth. Material choice — porcelain-fused-to-metal, monolithic zirconia, layered zirconia — drives a meaningful part of the price.
A quote that covers only the post can look roughly half the price of a quote covering all three. When you compare a Colombian "implant price" against a US "implant price," you may be comparing a post against a complete tooth.

These are typical ranges assembled for planning, not quotes, and they move. Treat them as a way to sanity-check a number you have been given, not as a price list.
What is frequently left out
The temporary
If the missing tooth is visible when you smile, you will want something in the gap during the months of integration. That might be a removable flipper or a temporary bridge, and it is a separate line item that quotes often omit.
The second trip's consultations
Some quotes cover the surgical visit and treat the restorative visit as a separate engagement. Ask whether the crown fitting appointments are included in the figure you were given.
Adjustments and remakes
If the crown comes back from the lab with a contact point that is slightly off, adjusting it is normal and usually included. If it has to be remade entirely, ask who pays. Policies vary.
Medication
Antibiotics, analgesics, and antimicrobial rinse are inexpensive in Colombia but are not always inside the quoted figure.
Ask for the treatment plan itemised line by line, with the implant system named, the abutment type specified, and the crown material stated. A clinic that produces this quickly is used to working with international patients. One that responds with a single bundled number over WhatsApp is not giving you enough to make a decision with.
Why implant system choice affects price
Implant systems vary widely in cost. Long-established manufacturers with decades of clinical literature and worldwide parts availability sit at the premium end. Newer or regional systems can be considerably cheaper and are frequently perfectly good.
The practical consideration is serviceability. In ten years, if an abutment screw fractures, a dentist wherever you happen to live then needs to identify the system and source a replacement part. That is straightforward for a widely distributed system and can be genuinely difficult for an obscure one.
So the question is not simply "which is better" — it is "will someone be able to work on this in a decade." Ask for the manufacturer and model in writing, and note it somewhere you will still have it in ten years.
Building the real comparison
To compare a Medellín plan against a plan at home honestly, add up:
- All three implant components, plus any graft or extraction
- Two round-trip flights
- Roughly seven nights of lodging per trip
- Ground transport, meals, and a contingency of ten to fifteen percent
- Two periods of time away from work
Then compare that total against your local quote — and check whether your local dentist offers a payment plan, because a financed US treatment at zero percent can beat a cash-paid trip abroad more often than people expect.
